Improve your allergies and asthma with chiropractic and nutrition

Millions of people have allergies and/or asthma.  Allergic responses may include watery, itchy eyes, running or stuffy nose, sneezing, or itchy roof of the mouth, to name a few. For many people, allergies contribute to their asthma. Asthma is the chronic respiratory disease characterized by episodes or attacks of difficulty breathing (dyspnea). Symptoms are caused by inflammation and narrowing of small airways and may include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and chest pain. Disease severity ranges from mild with occasional symptoms to severe with persistent symptoms that impact your quality of life.

Note: when you are having a severe, life threatening asthma attack, you should or call 911 go to the Emergency Room, NOT to a holistic practitioner.

Conventional treatments for allergies and asthma include possible medication for short-term relief or daily use of medication to treat symptoms or prevent asthma attacks; monitoring of early symptoms; avoiding factors that trigger symptoms and/or attacks; and removing risks (e.g., tobacco smoke or mold) from your environment.

1. Can Chiropractic adjustments help?

Yes, they may. Restrictions in the movement (subluxations) of the vertebrae and ribs in the upper back can contribute to difficulty in breathing and can be corrected with a chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments also enable the nerves that go to your lungs to function more normally.  They also calm and normalize your nervous system, possibly reducing your past allergic responses. Some patients are able to reduce the intensity of symptoms, frequency of attacks or just improve their ability to breathe without wheezing with chiropractic treatments.

2. How do nutritional supplements help with allergies or asthma?

With Nutrition Response Testing, which we provide in our office, your lungs, sinuses, eyes, etc. will be tested to see what is stressing them. (If you have difficulty breathing or other symptoms then that area is stressed) If it is found that there are nutrients that your body needs, then that can be given to you. Or, if there’s an irritant that is causing inflammation in any area of your body, (like lungs) then a supplement can be provided that will help your body more efficiently eliminate it.

3. Should I stop taking my medication for my allergies and/or asthma?

No.  Never stop a medication without talking to your prescribing medical doctor. However, some medications taken for allergies or asthma deplete vital nutrients from your body and have other negative side effects.  For example, muscle and joint pain, cramps or weakness, nervousness, tremors, headaches or gastric upset. We can reduce those side effects with whole food supplements that will strengthen your body and its ability to deal with the medication.

Your body is an intelligent healing machine. We at Hands on Healing provide chiropractic adjustments to optimize your nerve functioning and whole food nutrition to strengthen your body, so it can heal and function at the highest level.
