Four ways to increase chances for healthy and vital aging

(How to Make Sure Your Spine Lives a Long and Happy Life)

1.  Change positions every 30 min. or so, no matter what position you are in.

Our bodies are designed to move, not be in a static position for any length of time.

2. Use correct postures/positions when:

STANDING:

When standing, remember to slightly bend your knees.

You want to put one foot slightly forward.

It is important not to put all of your weight on one foot, because this will put extra stress on your hip and put your spine out of alignment.

SITTING:

Use a chair with a built in back support.

If your feet don’t touch the ground, put your feet on a little stool.  

Do not cross your legs, except at the ankles and check your workstation to make sure it is ergonomically sound.

SLEEPING:

Sleep on a bed that feels comfortable to you.

If on your back put a pillow under your knees.

If on your side, put the pillow between your knees.

Avoid sleeping on your stomach.

LIFTING:

Face the object, squat down, either with both legs or put one knee down on the floor.

Lift with your legs, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.

If it’s really heavy get help.

If you have to move it alone, then push it with your legs rather than pulling it.

WHEN CARRYING:

Spread the weight evenly as much as possible.

Carrying a light bag on one shoulder is okay, but avoid carrying a heavy bag on only one shoulder .

If you need to carry a heavy bag, such as a backpack or purse, then put the strap from what you're carrying across your chest and around your neck.

Better yet, put the heavy items in a bag with wheels!

3. Wear comfortable shoes with a low heel daily.

High heels cause many problems including painful foot conditions like bunions and hammer toes, sprained ankles, knee and hip pain and low back pain.

4. Get a chiropractic adjustment regularly!

See your chiropractor regularly to make sure your spine and nervous system are functioning at their best and so your back is pain free and strong.
