Chiropractic Myth #3:
“Chiropractic does the same thing as massage”
No, they do two very different things, but work well together to keep our bodies healthy.
Chiropractic takes care of all the joints in your body, focusing on the spinal joints; so that they are in proper alignment. Since your nerves exit the spinal cord in between the spinal bones, (vertebra) and go to every part of your body, the spinal bones need to be in the proper spot, so as to not put any pressure on them. We want those nerves to function at 100%, so that wherever they are going will function at 100% also.
Imagine if the nerves that go to your stomach were only functioning at 75%.
What would happen to the functioning of your stomach? You’d likely have problems in your stomach, such as indigestion, heartburn, gas, ulcers, etc. After receiving a chiropractic adjustment to your spine (and returning normal functioning to your nerves that go to your stomach) it is likely that you will see an improvement in your stomach’s functioning.
The adjustment doesn’t cure your stomach, just removes interference to the nerves going to your stomach. Your body does the healing.
Now what about massage? Massage improves the health of the muscles by compressing/stretching them, thus increasing the blood flow to and from them. It increases the removal of any toxic substances from the muscles also, which encourages proper functioning of the muscles and tendons and ligaments.
In our body, the muscles and bones attach to each other, so it’s smart to keep them both in great shape to prevent pain and keep full functioning of them as you age!
