E-CIGARETTES AND VAPING: Harmless fun?
As a chiropractor, my goal is to educate and treat patients to alleviate their pain, enable full functioning of their body to thereby prevent future health problems. Vaping is something that seems harmless and fun, but it actually has some risks…..
The use of an electronic cigarette to inhale vaporized chemical liquids, thus the term “vaping” (as opposed to smoking regular cigarettes, where you inhale the smoke of burning tobacco).
Inhalation of water vapor, with artificial scents, flavors and possibly nicotine.
Some sources state that switching to e-cigarettes/vaping is a way to stop or reduce smoking tobacco cigarettes and therefore beneficial.
They typically contain toxic substances such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and metal nanoparticles. None of these are beneficial for a person’s health.
There are no studies showing the long-term health effects of vaping.
Dangerous for Young People?
Vaping is marketed to youth to look “cool” with bright colors and candy or fruity flavors.
E-cigarettes are very popular with young people. Their use has grown dramatically in the last five years. Today, more high school students use e-cigarettes than regular cigarettes.
The use of e-cigarettes is higher among high school students than adults
The potential exists for young adults to become addicted to nicotine with vaping, and then switch to regular cigarettes.
Is it Worth the Health Risks?
No, inhaling anything except regular clean air into your lungs can have negative effects on not only your lungs and airways, but on your overall health.
Problems like asthma, bronchitis, and upper respiratory problems may be aggravated by vaping.
