Chiropractic Myth #7: “It Isn’t Safe”

Actually, chiropractic care is extremely safe.

This has been studied extensively over the years and the results show that you are much more likely to get hit by lightening or die from taking over-the-counter pain relievers (more than 1,500 deaths each year!) than to be injured by a chiropractic adjustment.

  • A study in 1996 showed that the incidence of injury from a chiropractic adjustment was 1 in 900,000 neck adjustments. (See a current list of studies done on this topic at end of article)
  • Cases of serious injury are practically nonexistent.
  • One measure of level of risk of injury is reflected in how inexpensive malpractice insurance is for chiropractors.  They pay a mere fraction of what a medical doctor pays.

What about that popping/cracking sound?  Is that my bone cracking?

  • NO!! The cracking or popping sound you hear is air leaving the joint, like when you pop your knuckles.
  • The popping sound is not necessary for the adjustment (movement of the joint) to be effective.
